Reading in English and Hungarian of Szilárd Borbély’s Berlin-Hamlet from a new translation by Rachel Mikos
Szilárd Borbély (b. 1964) is widely regarded as one of the most significant Hungarian poets of the present day.  His volume Berlin-Hamlet (2003), the first of his publications translated into English, has been described as a work of deliberate fragmentation and intermixing of radically different strands of asynchronous narrative. In the background is the actual fragment-mosaic of Berlin itself, as the chaotic post-Communist metropolis of the immediate past yet equally the haunted remnant of the world of the murdered German Jews, above all two of the “Hamlets” cited in the title: Franz Kafka, present through frequent quotes and paraphrases of his letters, and more obliquely, Berlin-born philosopher and critic Walter Benjamin. (Rachel Mikos)
